Toba, Mie — Ise-Shima

The whole place, even for one.

Toba, Mie. Four minutes on foot from Nakanogo Station, a guesthouse of just two rooms.
There are no shared spaces. From the moment you arrive until you leave, you need not meet anyone.

Stay Longer

One night, and you see just one thing.

The aquarium, and nothing else. The Grand Shrine, and nothing else. About 100 minutes from Nagoya, 120 from Osaka — close enough for a day trip, but a day trip is usually just one of them.
Two nights, and you can do several without ever changing rooms. Drop your bags, leave first thing, come back in the evening.

5 min walk

Toba Aquarium

Arrive before it opens, see it before the crowds, be back by noon.

30 min by train

Ise Grand Shrine

Early enough for the inner shrine at dawn.

10–30 min by boat

Toba's four islands

Sakateshima, Sugashima, Toshijima, Kamishima. Whether you catch the first boat depends on where you spent the night before.

1–10 min walk

A morning walk

Kontaiji temple is next door (a prefectural cultural property). Joanji, Kogakuji and the Kotohira shrine are all within walking distance.

To the four islands One-day ferry pass ¥1,480

Sakateshima, Toshijima, Sugashima, Kamishima. 10–30 minutes by boat. Valid only on the day of purchase; the pier is a 15-minute walk.

3 Nights and More

By the third night, it stops being a trip.

A multi-night discount begins at the second night; from the third, the room rate is 10% off, and the longer you stay the less it costs. We have written up how to spend three nights and more, separately.

About

What we can and cannot do.

These are ordinary apartments, rented out as they are. Better you know all of this before you book than after.

Yours alone
One party per apartment. There is no lobby, no lounge, and you will never share with strangers.
Getting in
The door has a keypad lock. Arrive at any hour — no one waits for you and you wait for no one. If you book directly on this site, the unlock code appears on screen once payment is complete. If you book through a travel site, that site's messages will let you know.
Layout
Two tatami rooms, a kitchen, and a separate bath and toilet. One to three guests.
No meals
No breakfast, no dinner. There is a microwave, but no stove. Instead, the room has a guide to the places to eat, cafés and izakaya within walking distance, so you needn't go looking once you arrive (places to eat nearby).
No parking
We can point you to the paid car park beside Nakanogo Station. ¥500 per day (checked August 2026 — please go by the sign on site).
No luggage storage
We cannot hold bags before check-in or after check-out. Check-out is 11:00. For an early check-in, ask us by email or SMS.

Host

This house grew out of a ryokan that ran in Toba for forty-five years. The cleaning, the replies to your booking, and these words are all mine.

If something goes wrong, I am the one who hears about it. Once you have arrived, reach me by email or SMS first.
